Don’t Give Up Your Burgers
No, you do not need to eliminate burgers from your diet. You just need to make a few changes. Here are some suggestions for creating a much healthier and still delicious burger.
Instead of an all-beef or ground chuck burger meat, try turkey, lean ground chicken or sirloin, but be sure it’s about 90%-93%. The more adventurist can use bison or venison.
Before preparing the patties, Sautee some finely chopped mushrooms in one tablespoon of olive oil for about 5-7 minutes. Allow the mixture to cool, then mix them with the meat and include other seasonings such as onion powder, fresh herbs and salt and pepper to taste. Cook them as you would a normal burger.
Our usual warning of avoiding store prepared veggie burgers because they generally contain a high content of salt and other undesirable flavor enhancers.
Don’t’ forget the bun. Look for whole wheat buns and check the label. Avoid those with high fructose corn syrup. Other suggestions include using flatbreads, lettuce wrap or even eggplant or portobello mushrooms. Alternatively, add your burger to a salad and skip the bun entirely.
